How can you find a truck driving job using the Internet? After the completion of a training program, you're ready to get your CDL and start your job search. But you're not sure how to find a job or how the Internet can help. Take a look at what new drivers need to know about local driving jobs in California, long-haul positions, and web-based employment resources.
Do You Need To Search for Local Jobs?
Before you start your job search, think about where you want to work. This will guide the web-based process and help you to focus your job-seeking efforts. If you live in California, a local position is an in-state job. This means your job won't take you away from family or friends for days or weeks at a time.
Examples of local driving jobs include delivery drivers, construction vehicle drivers, and bus drivers. Small businesses, larger national companies, contractors, and some government agencies may hire drivers for these types of jobs.
Long-haul or over-the-road jobs will typically take you out of California for several days or weeks at a time. These jobs may also include delivery driver positions. But instead of delivering packages to local companies or making the rounds at local grocery stores, you'll drive merchandise and other goods from a destination point (such as a manufacturer's warehouse) to retailers and other businesses.
There is no right or wrong way to decide which type of job is best for you. As you go through the decision-making process, consider how much each type of job pays (versus what salary level you expect), your personal preferences, your willingness to travel, and family or other local obligations.
Where Can You Find Local Driving Jobs Online?
There are several different ways to research local California truck driving jobs online. You could start with a large job search site. Even though these types of sites have national listings, you will have the opportunity to search for jobs in a specific area. When you search for driving jobs, you will need to add cite and state parameters. This will restrict the search to local driving opportunities.
You can also research local driving companies, construction companies, or other businesses that hire truckers. Google keywords such as Los Angeles truck driving jobs or construction companies in southern California to start your search. You can also search for specific websites if you know of companies (such as local retail stores) that hire drivers. Visit the Careers or Job Seekers section of each company's site to look for local openings.
Other local options include your community's, city's, or county's website. These sites provide government listings for truck driving jobs. While they may not have as many openings for new truckers as a national job board, you may find listings for construction vehicle or maintenance types of drivers.
Where Can You Find Long-Haul Jobs Online?
Like local truck driving jobs, employers often advertise long-haul jobs on national employment websites. Even though this type of job won't keep you in California 24/7, you may still need to start your search using your city and state as parameters. Many long-haul jobs are based out of a hub or headquartered in one area. Make sure that the job's starting point is local or easy for you to access.
What About Trucking Associations?
Truck driver associations or organizations often offer web-based job seeking services. The American Trucking Associations' website includes a page with job listings, a place to post your resume, and an option to get job alerts. The California Trucking Association also has an online career center that provides information on jobs for drivers.
